Theo Monsma was born in Holland just before the outbreak of World War 2.
His parents were successful
publicans in
Rotterdam.As
a school student, Theo jumped grades because he was such a gifted student. Upon
leaving school, he wanted to see the World and so joined the merchant
navy which took him to both
North America
and
South America
as well as to the
Middle East
on numerous occasions. Later Theo realized that he needed to plant some roots back in Holland and as a
result, he soon jumped at the opportunity to become an apprentice butcher
which, in those days, entailed a long 7 year course not dissimilar, to an
extent, to that of becoming a veterinary surgeon, believe it or not! Upon
graduating, Theo opened his own butcher shop and was very successful
at that business.
He had married Arika in the meantime and they had one
daughter, Caroline
In
1972, the family immigrated to
Adelaide
where Theo joined Woolworth’s as a butcher and where his considerable
talents were soon recognized. He quickly rose up the ranks to become the
head
of Woolworth’s’ meat sections for
South Australia
Later
Theo and Arika decided to move up to Queensland
where, after a successful stint selling life assurance, he became a
respected and sought-after business adviser. However, he missed his great
love of the food industry and after deciding to return to it,
he managed
food manufacturing and retail businesses
theo
was always very gifted in making food products and developed his own
recipes for cakes and cheesecake. Theo was not content with using an
existing recipe as he was of the opinion that they could be improved upon.
As a result, he experimented using many ideas and combinations. A long
time elapsed – not to mention a great deal of money - while he was
trying to develop that perfect recipe
for cheesecake.
He wanted something
that not only tasted great but was also simple to make by using few
ingredients.
He also recognized that it would be advantageous if it could
be frozen. If need be.
At long last: Bingo!
He knew that he had hit the jackpot. The result is what you are being
offered today.
In
fact, his cheesecake was admired and enjoyed so much by a successful
businessman; he quickly
recognized its huge potential for exporting
cheesecake to
Japan
(to which he regularly
traveled whilst transacting other business). In due
course, the cheesecake was accepted for importing
into that country but
that venture, due to logistical problems, did not proceed.
In
the meantime, at the behest of a few sponsors, Theo was responsible for
making what was recognized as the biggest cheesecake in the World!
Proceeds from the sale of
the innumerable pieces went to the
Breast
Cancer Association of
Queensland
666.65 Kg
